New Volkswagen Concept Cars - Beetle Ragster

The Beetle Ragster  -A new generation of a classic car

Revealed at the North American International Auto Show in Detroit in January 2005, is a new generation of New Beetle - a Ragster study which encapsulates a fresh design, sports car attitude and a glimpse into the future design of the New Beetle.

The Ragster, whose name is derived from a combination of Ragtop and Speedster, has not simply been created by cutting a hole out of the top. Instead, its designers and engineers used the New Beetle Cabriolet as their base; they shortened the A-pillar by around 90 mm and penned a U-shaped roof fixing as a frame for the canvas top. Overall, this makes the Ragster 103 mm lower than the standard New Beetle, while the wheel arches also have a flatter appearance.

New Volkswagen Concept Cars - L1 Concept

The Frankfurt Motor Show marked the debut of the revolutionary new Volkswagen L1 Concept - a diesel-electric hybrid vehicle constructed from aluminium and carbon fibre weighing just 380 kg and capable of returning 189 mpg on the combined cycle while emitting just 39 g/km of CO2.

The L1 can seat two occupants in tandem. They enter through a side-hinging, electrically operated canopy to maximise the aerodynamic efficiency of the L1 Concept. The result is a remarkable co-efficient of drag figure of just 0.195.

Not only is the body extremely aerodynamic but it's also very light and strong. The safety cell, constructed from carbon fibre reinforced plastic, weighs just 124 kg. At 3,813 mm in length, the L1 Concept is comparable to the Fox yet at just 1,143 mm in height it's as low as a Lamborghini Murcielago. Its width, at just 1,200 mm, is narrower than any conventional car on sale today.

New Volkswagen Concept Cars - Concept R

Concept R - design and technology working in partnership

Combining sharp design, outstanding functionality and innovative technology, the Concept R points to the future of the Volkswagen brand, and hints at a possible involvement in the world of genuine sports cars.

There are many interesting design features of the concept R - but one of the most striking is the way the designers have 'breathed' life into the car. When the driver turns on the ignition, the Volkswagen logo, which is generated digitally by a display, begins to pulsate in the so-called OLED screen.

New VW Concept Cars - Concept T

Concept T - an innovative off-road coupe

Until now, no sports car has been flexible enough in terms of drive properties to allow for driving off paved road surfaces. The VW concept T fills this gap. The off-road coupé is equipped with wing doors and harmonises the fascination of a thoroughbred sports car with the variability of a true off-roader, thereby bringing completely new lifestyle and leisure values within reach.

As you would expect from an agile sports car, the concept T is characterised by its exciting body dimensions (4079 mm / 13 ft 4 in long, 1963 mm / 6 ft 5 in wide and 1450 mm / 4 ft 9 in high). The powerful exterior also incorporates short body overhangs (front 826 mm /2 ft 8 in, rear 686 mm / 2 ft 3 in) for off-road driving as well as a large number of high-tech features.

What's New at Volkswagen - Polo, Golf exempt from Congestion charge

Not only are the highly efficient Volkswagen Polo BlueMotion and Golf BlueMotion models exempt from road tax but, as of this week, they are also exempt from the London Congestion Charge.

Under changes made to the rules governing the London Congestion Charge, vehicles emitting less than 100 g/km of CO2 are no longer required to pay the £10 daily charge to enter the Congestion Charge Zone. The Polo BlueMotion (91 g/km) and Golf BlueMotion (99 g/km) both fit this criterion, allowing owners to save potentially over £2,500 a year based on a daily commute into the capital.
